Description

An archaeological survey of the Glencripesdale National Nature Reserve was commissioned by Scottish Natural Heritage. The aim was to provide an inventory of archaeological sites, including a record of character, extent, state of preservation and date. A total of 41 separate monuments were recorded during the survey which divided into two separate groups: those pertaining to the Camas Salach settlement and those associated with woodland enclosure of the late 18th century and related charcoal burning. It was noted that the thicket of young trees on the lower slopes could easily be masking archaeological features and deep ploughing for forestry may have destroyed archaeological sites. <1> Note that this survey identified a number of archaeological sites which have not yet been indexed on the HER. <2>
