Description

A programme of geophysical prospection at the site of a construction of a new sewage treatment works at Allanfearn, near Inverness, indicated the presence of a number of archaeological features. Trial trenching targeted on the areas identified by the geophysics confirmed the presence of archaeological activity and full excavation followed. Features were widely spread over two fields and included the partial remains of a house structure, a probable burial mound and a cremation burial. A total of nine trenches were opened covering two fields. A total of nine boreholes and thirteen test-pits were dug across the two fields. Some were placed within trenches located over geophysical anomalies which therefore potentially contained archaeological features. <1>
