Description

A planning consent was granted by Highland Council to Orange PCS Ltd. for extending the development area accommodating an existing telecommunications site at the summit of Creag an Tuin Bhig, some 2.5 km south-west of Tomatin, Inverness-shire. One condition of that consent was for an archaeological watching brief to be undertaken during excavation prior to the installation of a new cabin on the site. The excavation was carried out on 9th May 2000 by representatives of Harry Lynch and Co, Civil Engineers of Linlithgow, on behalf of James Barr, Chartered Surveyors of Glasgow; the watching brief was conducted by John Lewis of Scotia Archaeology. During fieldwork and for several days before it, the weather was warm and dry, resulting in ideal conditions for the excavation of peaty soil and minimising the masking of features. No artefacts were retrieved from the peat or deposits of archaeological interest were uncovered below it. <1>
