Description

A programme of trial trenching was carried out by CFA Archaeology in 2004 on the site of a new Bingo Hall at Beechwood Park, Raigmore, Inverness. Ten trenches were excavated by machine, covering a total area of 919m², which amounted to just over 10% of the development area. Nothing of interest was identified in trenches 2, 6, 7 and 8. In addition modern features were seen in trenches 1, 4, 5 9 and 10, comprising test pits, linear land boundary ditches and an unrecorded electricity cable. In trench 3 a single sub-rectangular pit containing a flattened pottery vessel was found. In addition several pieces of iron slag were found in the backfill of the pit. Trenches 4 and 5 located a pair of parallel ditches aligned west-northwest and east-southeast though the southern example contained plastic in its fill. In light of the findings of the evaluation it was recommended that a watching brief be maintained during subsequent construction works. <1> A watching brief was subsequently maintained (see EHG1232) The finds form the site have been published. <2>
