Description
Archaeological survey on the route of the A836 road from Lednagualin to Ben Ainnie was commissioned by Highland Regional Council and conducted by AOC (Scotland) Ltd in advance of proposed upgrading of the road. The survey was conducted using the standard methods of topographic survey practised by AOC (Scotland) Ltd. The site was traversed at regular intervals to identify all surface features of archaeological interest and to establish points for subsequent instrument survey by EDM. Areas were also identified where no upstanding features were present, but which were considered to be of potential archaeological interest in terms of possible buried features, sediment accumulation and environmental history. Conditions for survey were favourable. The weather was dry and bright. Visibility of surface features was generally good. Vegetation consisted principally of rough pasture grasses, cropped short by recent sheep grazing or, elsewhere, of thin, low heather. Areas of bracken and gorse posed some problems of visibility, but neither of these is extensively established within the survey area. <1>
