Site Event/Activity record EHG1186 - Evaluation - Culduthel Farm, phase 1 & 4, Inverness

An evaluation was carried out by Headland Archaeology in 2004 on the site of a proposed housing development at Culduthel near Inverness (Phase 4). A total of thirteen trenches were mechanically excavated, representing a 5% sample of the total area of the site. A badger sett was located to the northern end of the area and a 50m strip of ground was left undisturbed at this end. The depth of topsoil varied between 0.23m - 0.55m. A series of shallow linear features were interpreted as plough furrows probably dating to the late C18- early C19. The only archaeological feature uncovered was a shallow pit in Trench 2 but it contained no finds. A 5m x 5m extension to trench 2 was stripped to the east side of the pit but no other features or finds were exposed. The concentration of charcoal flecks within the pit fill suggested that it may have formed a hearth or fire. <1>
