Description

Excavations were carried out at the surviving earthworks of Cnoc a' Chaisteil, Alness, by the Central Excavation Unit of the Scottish Development Department (HBM) over four weeks in June-July in 1983. Scheduled Monument consent had been granted earlier that year for the extraction of sand and gravel. The results indicated that there had been activity on the site prior to the construction of the earthworks, possibly sometime in prehistory with a period of re-use in the late C10 or early C11 AD. <1>
