Description
Glasgow University Archaeological Research Division (GUARD) carried out a geophysical survey in the area immediately surrounding the John O'Groat's Hotel in advance of a proposed extension scheme. Both resistivity and magnetometry techniques were employed. It was found that initial reservations about the suitability of magnetometry in the area were borne out and the sandy soil and presence of nearby buildings prevented the collection of a good set of results. At best the instrument was reduced to operating as an overly sophisticated metal detector. The resistivity survey results were much more useful and a number of areas of high and low resisitivity were detected. These results were used to guide a subsequent programme of test pitting (see EHG4309). <1>
