Description

An excavation was carried out on the former site of 13-21 Castle Street, Inverness, in 1979 led by J Wordsworth following demolition of the former properties and in advance of redevelopment. A trial trench excavated the previous year as part of the the Inverness Burgh Archaeological Survey (see EHG406) had demonstrated that significant medieval deposits survived in this part of Inverness. Excavation revealed that despite the presence of cellars (which were removed by mechanical excavator prior to the start of archaeological work) a sequence of medieval settlement from the C13-C15. In addition deposits dating to the Mesolithic were also recorded. No significant deposits survived after the C15. <1> <2>
