Description
A DBA and walkover survey was carried out on behalf of SLR Consulting Ltd in April 2004 in advance of a proposed wind farm development at Stroupster, west of Nybster, Caithness. The survey revealed that the hill of Stroupster had been utilised in a variety of ways of several thousand years. While none of the features were individually considered significant, collectively they form an important part of the cultural heritage of this upland area. The remains are primarily post-medieval in date. A far as is possible, the farm was to be maintaned and the older buiildings of the farm were to be renovated to contain the control room, ensuring their preservation. Peat deposits had the potential to mask prehistoric activity on the hill which presented problems in determining the archaeological potential of the development area. <1>
In 2013 an the erection of additional turbine was proposed. Whilst no new archaeological investigations were undertaken, as the information from the original application was used. Mitigation measures were put in place to ensure that there was no direct impact on the exisiting cultural heritage. <2>
