Site Event/Activity record EHG1314 - Trial trenching - 122 Academy Street, Inverness

An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Stuart Farrell in August 2005 at 122 Academy Street, Inverness in advance of site redevelopment. Trenches were to be placed at random to cover 10% of the development area but this proved impossible to undertake due to a deep overburden of demolition material and tarred car park, also a ‘live’ sewer runs through the middle of the site, there were also an area of concrete and an existing electricity supply. Work revealed that though the site had been recorded from the late medieval period the area had been heavily built over in the C18 and C19. Excavation work was limited to due to the existing services but no deposits or features of archaeological interest were revealed. It was recommended that further trial trenching be conducted to fulfil the existing planning condition or a watching brief be conducted when construction work commenced. <1> A second phase of evaluation was subsequently carried out by Alba Archaeology - see EHG3775.
