Description

A watching brief was carried out by Alba Archaeology Ltd in 2005, during a topsoil strip at a proposed Quarry site (Phase 1), at Rhicullen, Ross and Cromarty. Topsoil was removed to an archaeological horizon throughout the development area. The topsoil averaged approximately 0.40m in depth and consisted of a medium red/brown silty-sand of moderate compaction. There were substantial amounts of mixed gravels and assorted round stones and pebbles throughout. A number of large, charcoal-rich deposits were encountered during the topsoil strip. Upon archaeological excavation; these proved to be the organic remains of burnt trees (tree boles). No new archaeological features were encountered. The recommendation made was that no further archaeological work would be necessary during Phase 1 of the development. <1>
