Description

A geophysical survey was carried out by GSB Prospection Ltd as a part of the Channel 4 ‘Time team’ investigations in June 2005 to investigate a possible broch and its environs at Applecross, Wester Ross, to locate any archaeological features or structures. Approximately 0.5ha of resistance surveying and 0.15ha of gradiometer surveying were conducted on and around the broch structure. The broch was clearly visible from the data as a circular band of high resistance surrounded by areas of low resistance. Approximately 35m to the north-west of the broch another area of high resistance suggested a circular feature roughly 13m in diameter; whilst cautiously interpreted as a potential wheelhouse, the area could have been a result of topographical or geological processes. An area of the rectilinear earthworks, suggestive of house platforms, revealed no evidence of internal hearths or similar features during the geophysical survey. To the north of the broch a small area of low resistance, once excavated (see EHG1382), proved to be a midden. <1>
