Description

A rapid walk-over survey was conducted over an area affected by the proposed Woodland Grant Scheme, concentrating on the smaller area where planting was most likely to take place, but giving consideration to the wider area where planting might be considered. The object of the survey was to identify features of archaeological interest and to recommend actions which could be taken to mitigate the effects of planting on these features. The walk-over survey was carried out on May 13-14th 1999 in generally sunny conditions. The Highland Council's Sites and Monuments Register was consulted for information on archaeological sites already recorded for the area of the survey. The area is on Lewisian Gneiss, producing a landscape of knolls and ridges of bare fissured rock, numerous small lochans and deep peat bogs. In a landscape of mostly heather, grassy flushes on the lower slopes stand out in the springtime, and there are stands of natural woodland in many sheltered areas, as well as considerable tree regeneration indicating low grazing pressure. <1>
