Description
An archaeological survey and evaluation were carried out in advance of an access road and associated works in June 2007. The site survey was conducted in order to identify previously unknown sites within the development area. A previously unidentified hearth/stone setting was located during this survey. This consisted of stone lined rectangular feature close to the current north-south fence line which separates the arable land and forested area south of Raasay House. It measured c. 1m in width, and 1.5m in length. It was generally in poor condition, and consisted of four upright slabs protruding from eroded areas of grass covered topsoil. Excavation revealed that this feature contained burnt coal and ash and had seen at least two periods of use. The evaluation of 5% of defined areas meant that a total of 349m² of trenches were excavated. No features of archaeological significance were uncovered in any of the trenches. One trench was extended around the stone feature revealing a spread of dark burnt coal and ash immediately to the west. <1>
