Site Event/Activity record EHG189 - Watching brief - Inverness Flood Relief Channel Phase 4

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by RoCAS in 2011-2012 during site clearance and construction work for Phase 4 of the Inverness Flood Relief Channel. A site visit conducted prior to the start of works in May 2011 noted that the line of the flood channel would partly cross areas which had already been subject to archaeological evaluation. As a result in some areas certain sections of the site clearance were not fully supervised by an archaeologist after they had been established that topsoil and the underlying subsoil had been disturbed by previous construction work. These areas were, however, visited intermittently by an archaeologist in order to re-assess and monitor site clearance Sixty four features were recorded, fifty-four of which were field drains. The remaining features consisted of undated linear ploughmarks, isolated pits, a stone boundary wall and an earth/stone bank and ditch. No significant archaeological finds were recovered. <1>
