Description
Archaeological examination of this wood prior to felling revealed a number of significant remains. These included clearance cairns and roundhouse sites thought to date to the bronze age/iron age, a group of rectangular drystone structures dating to the 18th century or earlier and a substantial stone cairn, possibly the remains of a house dating to the iron age. The entire wood was walked in a series of traverses along the contour at intervals of 20-30 metres. Greater attention was placed to terraces and level ground where sites might be more plausibly anticipated. As none of the wood had been brashed surveying was slow and uncomfortable. Certain areas such as Cannich Gorge were not examined due to the severity of the terrain and it is possible some sites were missed due to the restructed visibility within the dense woodland and areas of bracken. <1>
