Description

A topographic survey of the site of a possible early Christian monastic site at Chapel Hill, Ballachly, in Dunbeath was carried out by GUARD in 1998 as part of a research project funded by Historic Scotland, the Dunbeath Preservation Trust and the landowners. The aim of the project was to advance knowledge about the Scheduled Monument beyond local traditions and references from C18 travellers to inform management policy for the site and to increase the level of information available. The survey area was split into four discrete survey blocks, suggested by topography and existing land divisions. The survey identified possible structures on the summit of Chapel Hill iteslf in addition to the remains of the possible chapel. A geophysical survey was also carried out (see EHG2884). <1>
