Description

A desk-based assessment was conducted to establish as far as possible the nature and extent of any archaeology likely to be affected by the construction of a new raw water main at Skinnet, Melness – Sutherland. No scheduled monuments or listed buildings are on the 2.5km route itself although Talmine Water Mill (NC565E21) to the N of the trench line is scheduled together with land to its SW running as far as Manse Bridge. <1> For most of its route the water main would follow the existing roads but there are areas where it cuts across open ground. The report makes recommendations for archaeological monitoring of the trench cutting in certain areas of higher archaeological potential.<2>
