Description

Further excavations were carried out in August 2008 by Clyne Heritage Society, Shorewatch and volunteers in order to investigate and record the eroding remains of sites facing imminent destruction at Brora Back beach, Clyne. The previously excavated area (trench 4) was extended over a large area to establish the extent of the building and the character of the deposists within. Three small trenches were laid out around the main trench, serving to highlight the extent of the midden deposits around the main buildings. An additional trench (trench 5) was opened up to the north of the 'Saltman's House' and this revealed an area of cobbling which, though on a slope, might have acted as a working area or stance for storage. A further trench (trench 6) was also opened, to the north of the dune thought to contain the Old Salt Works, produced only evidence for agriculturally modified soils. <1>
