Description
A watching brief was carried out at Thornton House in 1997 ahead of building alterations to a roofed structure attached to the main property. The extension was in use until the early 20th century and contained a boiler room and utility room. A new concrete floor was to be layed. The existing floor structure was excavated down to the support beams for the floor boards. Around 3-4 inches of soil was removed. Late 19th and 20th century debris were recovered, suggesting the building was used domestically for a time before being used as a store. Shotgun pellets, animal bones and meat hooks on the walls also suggest the building was used for butchery for a period. The concrete floor will seal any archaeological material deeper down. <1>
