Site Event/Activity record EHG3005 - Excavation - Applecross Broch, Wester Ross (2007 Season)

Archaeological excavations were carried out by Applecross Broch Community Archaeology Project assisted by professional archaeologists, over 10 days in April and 10 days during September 2007 as the multi-phased, second season of investigations at the broch site at Applecross, Wester Ross. Further excavation was carried out in the two quadrants, trenches 1 and 2, previously opened during the 2006 season, to more clearly define the broch structure as well as to excavate the central courtyard. Trench 2, the northern quadrant, was extended to the north west revealing three large slabs covering a possible souterrain entrance. <1> Trench 2 was also extended to the southeast to reveal the broch entrance uncovering two large sandstone slabs with enigmatic incised markings. <2> During the September 2007 phase a third trench, trench 3, was opened during a watching brief conducted by Highland Archaeology Services in preparation for the relocation of an electricity pole by SSE (Scottish and Southern Energy) from within the broch to outside the broch features. <3> A full report on all the investigations from 2006 to 2010 has also been produced. <4>
