Description

A desk-based assessment was conducted within a study area extending 500m from the centre of a proposed housing development. The assessment comprised a study of records held by the NMRS and maps held by the NLS. No archaeological sites were identified within the development area. However the road that bounds the site to the north west was an early thoroughfare between Fortrose and the ferry at Chanonry Point. The footpath that divides the site may also have early origins. It is concluded that the site has some potential to contain archaeological remains. These would most likely comprise medieval and post-medieval field systems relating to Fortrose but there is also potential for prehistoric settlement remains given the site's favourable coastal position. <1>
