Description

An archaeological assessment was commissioned by the Lochaber Forest District of the Forestry Commission in advance of felling of the area of the settlement of Corrychurrachan. The aim of the assessment was to establish the extent of the settlement, identify further archaeological features and proposed appropriate mitigation measures. An initial desk-top study was followed by a rapid walkover survey during which each of the archaeological sites identified was described, photographed and plotted using a hand-held GPS. The features were also marked out on the ground. A number of features were recorded and it was noted that ploughing and fallen trees had caused damage toeven quite upstanding buildings. More ephemeral features, such as cultivation remains, were not identified on the ground but may be masked by the vegetation and other features such as large erratic boulders. <1>
