Description
Phase 4 of a project to identify, survey and record archaeological remains in Strathconon, Ross-shire as part of RCAHMS's Scotland's Rural Past project. Details of individual sites are available in the linked report but have yet to be entered in the HER. Please note that phase 4 was actually the third stage of fieldwork to be completed by the project.<1>
A project design was submitted to the HER in May 2011 for an investigation of pits at Glenmeinich Farm. A number of pits were recorded at this location during field survey work and similar pits occur throughout Highland glens, particularly in the north east. No research has been carried out on these features and very little is known about them, but it is generally assumed that they were for storing root crops, potatoes or possibly turnips.
It was proposed to select a number of representative pits, survey and sample excavate them. The work was planned for late May 2011. <2>
