Site Event/Activity record EHG3314 - Trial trenching - Sandown, Nairn

Evaluation undertaken by AOC Archaeology Group in advance of a proposed housing development at the site of Sandown, Nairn. These works follow on from a previous 2% sample evaluation (EHG992). On the basis of these works, Highland Council Archaeology Unit recommended that a Strip and Record exercise and programme of test-pitting be undertaken to determine the archaeological baseline of four land parcels, amounting to approximately 7 ha of the 35 ha application site, with a view to recommending further works. The evaluation recorded groups of features, including a series of isolated features including post-holes/pits; a series of linear features, 19th and 20th century rubbish pits; a later prehistoric ring-ditch roundhouse, which included internal and external post-holes and pits. Three coarse stone tools and a fragment of a ceramic rimsherd were recovered from spoil associated with the area. <1>
