Description

Archaeological excavations were carried out by Applecross Broch Community Archaeology Project assisted by professional archaeologists, over two weeks in September 2009, for the fourth season of investigations at the broch site at Applecross, Wester Ross. The fourth quadrant, trench 8, was opened to the western side of the site. This trench revealed two outside courses of walling and subsequently trench 1 was extended to incorporate these additional features, linking the feature across the two quadrants. The remains of an intramural staircase and internal wall passage, first excavated by Time Team in 2005 (see EHG1382 trench 1 and 8), revealed a complex series of both industrial and ritual activities and closure events. Excavation of another outlying trench, trench 9, was targeted to investigate a feature of recumbent slabs found along the edge of trench 2, appearing to be a sub-broch passage or drain. <1> A full report on all the investigations from 2006 to 2010 has also been produced. <2>
