Description

An archaeological evaluation was carried out by by Glasgow University Archaeological Research Division (GUARD), on behalf of Scottish & Southern Energy, on an area proposed for development at Knollbuck, Culachy Estate, Fort Augustus. The site of a proposed tower FT9B, to the north of the settlement of Knollbuck, was evaluated with a 10% strip of the total area proposed for development (2500m2). Eight trenches were excavated and identified only one possible archaeological feature, deposit of alder charcoal. It is thought that this may have washed down the hill from a nearby hearth or bloomery site and may be of some age, possibly prehistoric. <1>
