Description
Following earlier evaluation and excavation, GUARD conducted an archaeological watching brief in 2010 during construction works for the flood relief channel. This focused on the ground surrounding the two areas subject to archaeological excavation in 2009 (see EHG3100) and the area to the immediate east of Essich Road. A total of 24 features were encountered including 21 pits and 3 postholes which were all fully excavated. Four pits contained fragments of pot, one of which has been dated to the Late Bronze Age (Ballin-Smith pers comm.), while others contained burnt material including charcoal fragments, hazelnut shells and bone. <1>
