Description
A trial trenching evaluation was conducted in order to clarify whether there was any evidence of structures on a mound at Doune which had previously been identified as a possible broch or dun. One trial trench measuring 20 metres by 3 metres was excavated on the top of the mound, together with an investigation of the top of a quarry face created in the 1990s.
Archaeological evidence of structures was found at the northern end of the mound including a short section of walling, flat paving stones, socket stone and burnt areas. However this was fragmentary and shallow in nature and it was not possible within the scope of the work to clarify the purpose, date or extent of the features.
No portable artefacts were found during the excavation. Subsequently, however, a stone bowl or cup of probable Iron Age date was reportedly found from the spoil heap near the north-east corner of Trench 1. <1>-<3>
