Description
A test-pitting evaluation was carried out by West Coast Archaeological Services in 2011 in advance of ground works for the erection of a new water treatment plan and associated developments at a location 120m SE of Kinloch, Shieldaig. The proposed development lay within a wider area where important prehistoric remains have been recorded in the past. This included a stone working-site dating to around 2500BC, although the discovery of lithic artefacts including narrow blade microliths and a tanged point indicated a much earlier date for the occupation of the site. A total of 33 test pits were excavated on the site on a 10 metre grid across the main area of development with additional test pits in areas with higher potential. Five of the test pits were subsequently extended. The archaeological fieldwork carried out at the site revealed the survival and extent of in-situ archaeological deposits, and a lithics assemblage including narrow-blade microliths, cores, scrapers, blades, flakes and debitage. <1>
