Description

GUARD was commissioned by Jacobs Babtie Ltd, on behalf of the National Trust for Scotland to carry out a multi-faceted investigation in 2005 at Culloden Battlefield as part of a a programme of site reassessment associated with the Culloden Battlefield Memorial Project. A metal detector survey was carried out across a wide transect passing roughly east to west through the Field of the English, the reconstructed Leanach enclosure and the area beyond. This resulted in a considerable assembalge of battle-related debris, including 260 lead balls of various types, of which 203 were musket balls. This was interpreted as representing several stages of the battle. A concentration of artefacts recovered from the northern end of the survey area coincided with a large anomaly seen in the geophysical survey. <1> See EHG1473 for the geophysical survey and EHG3693 for the excavation.
