Description
GUARD was commissioned by Jacobs Babtie Ltd, on behalf of the National Trust for Scotland to carry out a multi-faceted investigation in 2005 at Culloden Battlefield as part of a a programme of site reassessment associated with the Culloden Battlefield Memorial Project. The hand-excavation of two evaluation trenches across geophysical anomalies, first identified after survey in 2000, was carried out in an effort to locate the buried remains of a building related to the farmstead now represented by Old Leanach Cottage. Trench 1 measured 8m x 1.5m and contained two features, one of which, a concrete pad was probably related to the area's former use as a visitor car park, and a possible truncted post hole. The second trench, which measured 7m x 1m, contained a linear feature, which may relate to the foundation cut for the wall of a building, possibly related to the farmstead. <1>
See EHG1473 for the geophysical survey and EHG3692 for the metal detecting survey.
