Description

A watching brief and excavations were carried out by Kirkdale Archaeology at the Northeast Battery of Fort George during the summer of 1995, in the course of repair work to the Battery and casemates 15 to 21. The archaeological work involved the removal of deposits overlying the casemate roofs and the recording of the underlying structures. The sequence of construction of the outer and inner rampart walls was derived, along with evidence for the 18th century waterproofing. Contemporary graffiti was recorded on the mortared faces of some of the structures, and the sequence of repairs and alterations was recorded. The work confirmed the execution of the elaborate measures devised for the make-up of these defences. (DES Entry <1>) For more detail see <2>
