Site Event/Activity record EHG3740 - Watching brief - new campsite, Foyers

A desk-based assessment and watching brief was conducted by Ross and Cromarty Archaeological Services in early 2013 during site clearance for construction of a new camping and caravan site at Foyers, located on the southeastern shore of Loch Ness in Inverness-shire. The development site clearance was conducted under close archaeological supervision using a mechanical excavator, fitted with a flat-bladed ditching bucket and small site dumpers. Groundworks for the new road, building footprints, service trenches, borrow pits and most caravan stances were monitored by an archaeologist. Stances that were cleared of turf only and not dug to the natural subsoil were checked by an archaeologist after excavation. Twenty-seven features were identified; they included a ditch, a possible fire-pit, remnants of an old ground surface, a spread of stone or remains of field clearance material and a circa mid-1900s animal burial pit. The remaining features comprised scattered pits in the subsoil, most of which remain inconclusive in interpretation. There were no recommendations for further work on the site. <1>
