Description
An archaeological watching brief was carried out by Highland Archaeology Services in May 2013 to identify and record any features or artefacts of cultural heritage significance affected by construction of a water main along the towpath of the Caledonian Canal to serve a new housing development at St Valery Avenue, Inverness. Although an archaeologist was not on site at all times the site was visited at least once a day. The pipe trench was opened along the towpath northwards from Tomnahurich Bridge, past the cemetery then leaving the towpath to serve a small housing development. Observations included the towpath section, which was within the scheduled area of the Caledonian Canal and an open area to the northeast of the canal behind the towpath embankment. During visits the open areas of pipe trench were carefully inspected for evidence of archaeological or other cultural heritage features, including any potential for further evidence. The pipe trench was entirely contained within the built-up material of the towpath embankment. No previously unrecorded cultural heritage features were identified during this work. <1>
