Description
A rapid pre-afforestation survey was undertaken by Headland Archaeology Ltd of two areas on the south side of Upper Loch Torridon. The two survey areas extended to 27 and 17 ha. The larger area covered the steep north-west facing slopes on the east side of the river Glac na Gainmhich some 300 m to the south-east of the Loch Torridon Hotel. The area is up to 800 m long and between 250 and 400 m wide. The smaller area covered the gentle south-west facing slopes at the northern end of Loch Damph some 3.5 km further west. This area measured 700 m north to south and is up to 400 m wide. Existing sources at the National Monuments Record of Scotland and the National Map Library were consulted. In the field, the survey areas were traversed in search for archeological features. The smaller area to the west was traversed at regular intervals, while the walkover to the east was concentrated upon the flatter areas along the river, the higher plateau at the south end, and the lower plateau at the north end of the area. <1>
