Site Event/Activity record EHG4202 - DBA and walkover survey - proposed sand and gravel quarry, Dalmagarry

A cultural heritage assessment was undertaken by G Geddes in 2014 on behalf of Alba Archaeology as part of the scoping exercise for a quarry at Dalmagarry. The assessment comprised a desk-based assessment and field survey. A large swathe of the development site had been previously exploited as a gravel pit, and this area was not systematically searched for archaeological features. In contrast, much of the ground east of this pit had been wooded but, despite what one might think, the woodland had been planted in a series of phases, and the ground to the east of an unnamed burn in particular appeared to have been hand-planted at fairly wide intervals. Thus, the likelihood of preservation across the site is quite varied and efforts were concentrated in the areas most likely to yield results. Two previously unknown archaeological features, probably animal traps, were found and recorded. <1>
