Description

Headland Archaeology Ltd undertook a trial trench evaluation at the preferred location of the proposed Spittal AC & DC Converter Substation, on land to the west of the A9 near Spittal, 20km west of Wick in 2014. The evaluation comprised 60 trial trenches representing a 2% sample of the planning application area and targeting anomalies recorded during a geophysical (magnetometer) survey of the area carried out in March 2014 (see EHG4168). No features of archaeological interest were recorded during the evaluation, other than a series of drains relating to modern agricultural improvements. Trenches targeting the geophysical anomalies identified in the geophysical survey established that they were of natural origin. <1>
