Site Event/Activity record EHG4316 - DBA and walkover survey - proposed Tornagrain Planned Town

A DBA and walkover survey was carried out by CFA Archaeology Ltd in 2007(?) in advance of the development of the new planned town at Tornagrain, near Inverness. Forty-five sites of cultural heritage importance were identified with the proposed area of development. There were no SAMs, Listed Buildings, or Historic Gardens and Designed Landscapes within the area. However, several features within the vicinity of the development area were considered as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment: the Kerrowaird settlements and funerary remains; the area around the Category A Listed Dalcross Castle and designed landscape including the scheduled Dalcross Castle Chambered Cairn and Stone Circle; Dalcross Church and the Category A Listed Castle Stuart. Of the 45 sites identified, 6 were recorded on the NMRS and the Highland Council HER - Mid Coul Cottages, Mid Coul Farmhouse, a cairn and cist, the site of a possible burnt mound, an area of rig and furrow cultivation and a plantation bank. The examination of cartographic sources led to the identification of 39 additional archaeological sites and monuments. A full gazetteer of these sites is included in the attached report. <1>
