Description

A DBA and field survey were carried out by CFA Archaeology Ltd in June 2006 in advance of a proposed business park development at Inverness airport. The field survey did not include land within the airport or Dalcross Industrial Estate. Tornagrain Wood was inspected in some detail, although the varying density of woodland and thickness of undergrowth meant that it was possibe that not all visible surface remains of archaeological significance were detected. The same was also true for Drumnacreech Wood, although in this case the northwest part of the woodland was inspected in less detail as it lay remote from the proposed development locations as understood at the time of the survey. Thirty-one sites of archaeological significance were identified within and adjacent to the application site boundary. The sites included two prehistoric artefact findspots; a number of medieval or later farming townships, improved farm ranges and cottages, other settlements, farm buildings, boundary banks, a military road, a railway station, a WW2 aerodrome, a cropmark enclosure and natural mounds with folkloric associations. Twenty-eight key cultural heritage receptors were identified in the vicinity, including a range of scheduled ancient monuments (SAMs), Listed Buildings (LBs), a conservation area and a designed landsape. None were considered to be at significant risk of impact by the proposed development. <1>
