Description

A DBA and walkover survey were carried out in March 2005 by Headland Archaeology Ltd to assess the status and condition of known sites, and to identify any further unrecorded sites, in advance of a proposed wind farm development at Dunbeath, Latheron, Caithness. The walkover survey covered a series of 100m wide areas and corridors, centred on the proposed locations of turbines and other elements of the scheme likely to cause ground disturbance, including access tracks, site compounds and crane bases. Four potential sites for borrow pits were also assessed, as well as the area between the two westernmost borrow pits. Seventeen sites were identified within the application boundary including shieling huts, townships, hut circles, settlement, sheepfolds and huts, a broch and aisled houses. Six of theses sites were Scheduled Monuments. There were twenty-five SAMs or groups of SAMs within 5km of the site boundary. <1>
