Description

An trial trenching evalauation was conducted by West Coast Archaeological Services in 2014 prior to the proposed development of a camping and caravan park at Coulcroft, Edderton. Sixteen trenches were laid out by hand according to the brief submitted to Highland Council with only minor adjustments to take account of terrain and weather conditions on the day. (Trench 4 was rotated c. 90 degrees to avoid working across a steep slope made unstable by heavy rain.) The trenches were laid out to sample the whole area of proposed development but most were concentrated on flat areas likely to have archaeological sites and where possible avoiding working directly under the power line that runs through the site. No known archaeological sites were noted in the evaluation area during the desk based assessment and only one feature (a relatively modern plough mark) was noted during the evaluation.<1>
