Description

A desk-based assessment and walkover survey of Cuil on the shore of Loch Linnhe, Lochaber, was carried out in 2010 by N Malcolm for RCAHMS' 'Scotland's Rural Past Project'. Many more sites than originally expected were found and recorded. Census reports (1841-1901) and Valuation Rolls (1860-1970) were inspected to ascertain the changes in population over the years. Other historical documents were looked at resulting in a History of Cuil being written. The various dyke systems were recorded and attention was paid to the woods in the area and to fishing and agricultural practices. Comments were made about the buildings and all buildings dating to before 1900 were recorded along with a few from the C20. Each site was assessed and plans of many were drawn up. <1>
