Description

A desk based assessment and walkover survey were carried out by Headland Archaeology in 2014 in advance of a proposed wind farm development at Cnoc an Eas, Glen Urquhart and to inform an environmental statement. The assessment walkover was carried out in currently un-forested areas of the inner study area within the construction footprint of the development. Where accessible (in fire breaks etc.) the construction footprint was also assessed within forested areas. Heritage assets in un-forested areas that were likely to experience operational effects were also visited. With the exception of the Creag Mùigeall ridge, and a narrow band along the northern edge, the study area was largely under forestry plantation, which was as high as 390m AOD in places, and was mostly inaccessible for survey at the time of the site walkover. The unforested areas were subject to a walkover and comprised areas of exposed bedrock and blanket bog at altitudes of 360m AOD and higher. These unforested areas, and the forested areas above 350m AOD, were considered to be of negligible potential. Two new sites, a probable prehistoric cairn and a stone mound, which may have been of more recent date, were identified. <1>
