Description

Trial excavations, comprising two trenches, were undertaken by the Scottish Urban Archaeological Trust in 1988 on Church Steet, Nairn on the site of a former school, latterly used as a warehouse, following demolition of the majority of the building and prior to proposed site redevelopment. A tower from the former school was to be retained. The first trench, just north of the tower measured 3m x 1m. Natural sand was found only 0.2m beneath the turf. The second trench was excavated c 8m south of the tower and c 7m in from the boundary wall beside Church Street. A possible drystone wall foundation cut into the natural sand and which had itself been cut by a small square feature from which a sherd of victorian pottery was retrieved were the only features seen. It was recommended that no further site work would be required. <1> The report can be obtained from Historic Environment Scotland (former RCAHMS).
