Description
An archaeological excavation was undertaken by Northlight Heritage in 2013 ahead of the proposed development of a converter station at Wester Balblair, part of Scottish & Southern Energy’s Western Isles Connection programme, near Beauly. Six features which had been previously identified by survey and investigated through evaluation were excavated, although one of these, a putative hut-circle, was found to be a natural mound. The four remaining features comprised; two low banks, two round cairns, and a ring enclosure defined by a low stone bank. All these features were of probable prehistoric date and related to a rich prehistoric landscape which survives within the Balblair Woods. A programme of post-excavation analysis was proposed, along with archaeological watching brief monitoring of future construction works. <1>
