Description

A series of archaeological features, of possible prehistoric date, were identified during an archaeological watching brief by Northlight Heritage supervising topsoil stripping at Fanellan, near Beauly in 2011. The site was located within the extents of a tower compound (BF8) which forms part of the Beauly to Denny 400kV overhead line development programme. Subsequent archaeological excavation, also by Northlight Heritage, revealed a number of negative-cut archaeological features, the majority of which appeared only as a scatter, although a possible structure or shelter was identified in the western part of the excavation area. As no artefacts were found during the excavation and the features were heavily truncated, the function and date of the site cannot be definitively determined at this stage. All archaeological features uncovered were fully excavated and recorded during consecutive watching brief and excavation phases. <1>
