Description
Mr Gary Cooper commissioned Alder Archaeology to undertake an archaeological standing building survey on the site of a building conversion at Glenfinnan, Lochaber. The proposed development site is a two-storey stone building, centred on NGR NM 90363 80919. The work was undertaken on 28th January 2016 in wet weather conditions. The requirement was for a Level 1 survey, comprising a photographic and narrative record, together with background research. The building, known locally as The Castle or The Armoury, lay across the Fort William – Mallaig road from an 1873 EW Pugin church and between a church school and Chapel House (presbytery). Special attention was to be paid to any evidence of the original purpose of the building. No definite evidence of purpose could be established, but cartographic evidence, supported by details of building fabric and style, suggested a later 19th Century date and a possible association with the church. <1>
