Description
A rapid archaeological survey of an area of proposed plantation at Struie, Easter Ross was conducted to assess the nature and importance of the archaeological remains in this area and to make recommendations for their protection during planting operations and from subsequent tree growth. The plantation was being established under the Woodland Grant Scheme. The survey was carried out in two parts. The first consisted of a desk-bound examination of existing records in the SMR of Highland Council's Archaeology Service, earlier map sources held by Highland Council Archive Service and secondary documentary references from Inverness Reference Library. A field visit was carried out on the 11th July 1997 in misty/muggy conditions and the area was covered in a series of transects spaced up to 150 metres apart. Particular attention was focused on grass and on bracken flushes. Visibility of archaeological sites was restricted by the dense heather growth, in several places over 1 metre high, and by dense bracken spreads, these being concentrated at the south of the survey area. <1>
